UK SCHOOLS’ GAMES JUDO SUCCESS

James Reid (Form III), the reigning All-Ireland Schools’ Judo Champion, and Bronze medalist at Under 18 level in the Commonwealth Judo Championships, competed for the School in the UK Schools’ Games, held in the Excel Centre in London, venue for the 2012 Olympic Judo Competition.

James, despite being 14, competed at Under 18 level and did so with great credit, reaching the pool stage and losing only to the British and Brazilian Number 1 competitors, both of whom were aged 18.

The experience was invaluable, and it is interesting to note that James will be eligible for the same competition, in the same category, prior to the 2016 Olympics.

FÉILE AN PHOBAIL SHORT STORY SUCCESS

For the past two years our pupils have had significant success in the West Belfast Festival. This year’s results show that Academy pupils continue to display their ability to offer entertaining and exciting short stories.

There was an excellent response to this competition, with 80 entries being sent to the Féile an Phobail offices from Academy pupils. Well done to Aimee, Jack and Mimi on their success.

Congratulations to St.Louise’s Comprehensive College and St.Mary’s CBS.

Notes from Judges:

“The standard of writing was again extremely high, impressively so especially among some in the younger category. Judging this year was particularly challenging; in the top three categories, only a half point separated the winners.”

A large number of entries and themes covered by young writers included: ghost stories, sci-fi, fantasy and myth, thrillers, true life, sport, bullying, 9/11 attacks and the subsequent wars that followed.
