Emily Taggart (Form MVI) has accepted a rowing and academic scholarship to Michigan State University, USA, to start in August 2013 for 4 years. Emily started rowing in June 2012 after being selected through a Rowing Ireland talent identification scheme. She trains 6 days a week at Belfast Boat Club and is coached through the Rowing Ireland Development Academy.

In order to apply to American universities, Emily had to achieve a certain time on the ergometer (rowing machine) of at least 7min20sec or better over a distance of 2km. This standard was comfortably achieved in November 2012, and after visiting Michigan University in February, MSU was the overwhelming choice and their scholarship accepted. She will be studying Animal Science there in order to complete a Veterinary Science degree later.

Congratulations to Faye Kidd (Form LVI) and Abbie Brown (Form IV) who represented Ulster U17 over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Faye Kidd had the honour of captaining the team, who were invited to play a 3 match series against England U17s at Lilleshall.

The first match was a 0-0 draw, then Ulster went on to record two historic victories with scores of 2-1 and 2-0 to secure the series win – the first time Ulster have ever beaten England at this level.

This year has proven to be particularly successful one for siblings James and Kiah Reid. Both have performed tremendously well at numerous Judo competitions in both Ireland and England.

In March James (Form IV) represented B.R.A. in the British Schools’ Judo Competition in Sheffield and secured the Bronze medal. Then in April he won the Gold medal at the Northern Ireland Open at Queen’s University.

Not to be outdone by her older brother, Kiah (Form III) has so far this year become an All-Ireland champion, earned a Bronze medal in Scotland at an international competition and won a Silver medal at the Northern Ireland Open at the end of April – missing out on Gold to the current European champion. Her consistently high performances have secured her place on the Northern Ireland squad as an ‘elite player’.

Over the months of February and March 2013, I competed in a number of different Show Jumping competitions to qualify for a major show in Fontainebleau, France. In the last week of March, Katy Saunders (the National Chairperson for Show Jumping of Ireland) rang my mum to tell her I had qualified as an individual to ride for Ireland in Fontainebleau! Qualifying for Fontainebleau was such a great achievement, as it was my first international show.

On Wednesday 17th April, I flew into Charles De Gaulle Airport, Paris. From there it was a two hour taxi drive to the Fontainebleau. On arriving at the show we went and found our horse lorry, which my mum had driven over on the Monday. I threw my bag into the lorry and went for a walk with my friend Rachel to explore the show. I have never seen to a show like it in my life; I was amazed at how perfect everything was. It was such a big place we ended up returning for bikes and cycling around.

The main grass arena was looked after by the golf course keepers based next door, so the ground was perfect to jump on. In the main arena (which I was jumping in) there were massive open water jumps all around it. I couldn’t wait to get started.

I got underway on the Friday and my first class was the CSIP 1.25m. Unfortunately I had one fence down, but I was not annoyed at all by hitting this fence and was very happy with my performance. It was the first day in the ring for me and my pony, Thorn, and he jumped superbly well. On Saturday I was entered in another 1.25m and again Thorn jumped amazingly well, but just one unlucky tap on a fence brought it down. On the third and final day of jumping it was the CSIP 1.30/1.35m Grand Prix. It was a big test for my pony, Thorn, and me as we are only a new partnership, but with the help of my trainer, Stephan Cox, I was ready to go. We ended with 12 faults, but I came away happy as this was such a huge challenge. Out of 75 ponies entered in the class, I finished 24th (there were only two double clears) and 4th out of the Irish competitors.

Jumping at Fontainebleau was such an amazing experience and I hope to qualify again next year.
