This week the Politics Society had a cinema trip to watch Academy Award-nominated ‘Selma’, directed by Ava DuVernay and starring David Oyelowo. The film is based on the demonstrations led by Martin Luther King Jr. between two towns in Alabama as a protest against systematic racism regarding the right to vote. Showing the struggle with both government officials and aggressive opposition, students were shocked – and even moved to tears – by this highly engaging adaption. Faithful to the fight of the civil rights movements of the time, as well as in the representation of the state administration, ‘Selma’ is a must-see, especially considering events here in the 1960s.
