Welcome to Belfast Royal Academy

The 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme provides us with a sombre reminder of the great loss of life which took place on the battlefields of France in 1916. Like most other schools during this time, the Academy lost a great many of its former pupils, not only during the Somme Offensive, but throughout the entirety of the Great War.

One such former pupil was Claud Arthur Leonard Walker. Having been commissioned into the Royal Inniskillings, 2nd Lieutenant Walker, whose father was the Reverend Robert Walker, Rector of St. Matthew’s Church on the Shankill Road, was killed at the Somme on 11th July 1916. He is buried at Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery, France.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
