Beyond The Classroom – Global Opportunities
As a school, we seek to provide opportunities for our pupils to learn about and visit different countries of the world through exchange visits and partnerships in order to develop a sense of Global Citizenship. Pupils are encouraged and challenged to see the importance of looking outwards to the wider world they are part of; learning from others and contributing in small ways to make the lives of others better.
Since 2008 there have been organised work experience visits to Bangladesh and Malawi, together with exchange visits to Sweden and Spain. Various Departments have also organised study trips to Barcelona, Paris, Prague and Rome. We have annual exchanges with Belvedere College in Dublin and host visiting student groups from the USA.
One of the partnerships in which the whole school community is involved is with Mulanje Mission in Malawi. The Mission comprises a Hospital, Secondary School, Primary Schools, and a Church. Lower Sixth pupils have the opportunity to gain work experience there in Teaching, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Child Care, as well as undertaking practical project work to help develop the community in Mulanje and participate in cultural exchange events.
In Bangladesh pupils gained work experience in Finance, Business and Economics and Medicine. They were challenged and inspired by the work of the Acid Survivors Clinic in Dhaka and have supported this work through fund-raising.
In recognition of these global links and their contribution to the curriculum, described by the British Council as “an impressive range of work”, the School was awarded the International School Award, accredited for three years from 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2021.
