We are excited to announce that on Tuesday 12th November, four Junior pupils travelled to Wellington College to compete in the regional heat of the International Kids’ Lit Quiz.

Led by a quiz master from New Zealand, teams of four students from selected schools, work together to answer 100 wide ranging book-related questions. Congratulations to the following four pupils for representing B.R.A superbly:

  • Niall Blaskett
  • Abigail Love
  • Maya Campbell
  • Madhumitha Pandiarjaj

These four Academy pupils had worked tremendously hard from September to gain a place to represent B.R.A at the quiz. They got off to an incredible start, winning the opening round. The team members were each awarded a book of their choice for this incredible achievement.

Team B.R.A were in the top three of the 26 competing schools for the overwhelming majority of the 3 hour quiz and ended placed 6th. The Academy were only 11.5 points away from the overall quiz winners.

Huge congratulations also go to the three Academy pupils who attended the quiz as supporters and were judged overall winners of the Fictional Character Dress-up Competition. Ruby Clements, Ella O’Carroll and Hannah Rankins dressed as characters from the ‘Hunger Games’ series of books by Suzanne Collins and were awarded with books and chocolate for their success.

Pupils also had the incredible opportunity of meeting Belfast born children’s author Kelly McCaughrain. Pupils had read her debut novel last year for Northern Ireland Book Award shadowing. Kelly is the current Seamus Heaney Children’s Writing Fellow for Northern Ireland and 2019 winner of the Northern Ireland Book Award.

Academy pupils were not the only ones walking away with prizes from the quiz. Mr Spence, Head of English managed to win an audience round!
